What's Your Opinion

I've had a lot to say about the aftermath of the recent hurricanes and I will have more to share in the coming weeks. Now, I would like to invite your comments about a recent poll I saw on television. When Blacks were asked, "Were there racial implications in providing timely aid to the people in New Orleans?" Blacks responded 76% Yes and Whites responded 24% Yes.

What is your opinion and why? Also, please comment on whether you believe a "racial divide" presently exists between Blacks and Whites in the U.S.

Wow! That's a loaded question that could take a book to answer! I believe that the discrepancy in the responses from whites & blacks arises from the fact that whites are not subject to racism as are blacks. Thus, they often choose not to believe that racism still exists...or at least to the level it does. I DO believe that there is still a racial divide. No...actually I KNOW WITHOUT A DOUBT that there is still a racial divide. We're putting our heads in the sand, if we believe otherwise. I am a white woman...raised in Little Rock, AR...now residing in Utah. I've transracially adopted two black girls & have fostered Hispanic & Native American children. I can't begin to tell you how my heart aches for the things my children face everyday, & I can't begin to relay the racism they've been subjected to at such tender ages. Yes, the racial divide is there...lurking at every moment...sometimes lunging out at us without warning, & it's a tragedy. joyehenrie@hotmail.com

Born in the housing projects of New Orleans, Dr. Guillory went on to earn a doctorate degree in physical chemistry, publish over 100 articles on the topic, and serve as chairman of the chemistry department of a major university.

Two decades ago, Dr. Guillory left the academic world, but continues teaching -- now as CEO of corporate consulting firm Innovations International.
